Bleecker Street Ashtanga
Bleecker Street Ashtanga is a traditionally taught Mysore Style Program in the heart of historic Greenwich Village. The program is led by Michael Guiou, a Level 2 Authorized teacher by KPJAYI, in a comfortable and friendly atmosphere. The studio includes large windows overlooking iconic Bleecker St., spacious changing rooms, mat storage space, and wifi. Hosted by Sacred Sounds Yoga we are easily accessible by public transportation, West 4th St. subway station being closest. Whether you are new to the Ashtanga system of yoga, a long time practitioner looking for a practice home, or a traveling ashtangi stopping over in NYC, Bleecker Street Ashtanga is happy to welcome you to our focused and joyful practice group.
Ashtanga yoga is a classical system of breathing and movement from India. It builds strength, flexibility, and focus through a set series of yoga postures (asanas) and linking movements (vinyasas). The practice integrates breath with movement following a progressive sequence of postures that detoxifies, balances, and strengthens both body and mind.
Ashtanga is traditionally taught in the “Mysore” style, named for the city of Mysore in South India. Mysore is a specialized and highly personalized approach to teaching. Each student is taught the sequence of postures individually: a one-on-one lesson within a group class. Every student is supported in an ongoing program that is appropriate for beginners and advanced practitioners alike. Over time, through repetition and consistent practice, the student memorizes the sequence of breathing and movement while building flexibility, strength, and concentration. The student is guided in a systematic and thoughtful manner through postures of increasing difficulty. This method teaches the student a practice he or she can take anywhere in the world, regardless of whether or not a teacher is at hand to supervise.
Students of all levels are welcome! However, due to the individual approach and progressive nature of the program, no drop-ins are allowed unless you already have an established Mysore Ashtanga practice.

*teacher is present half an hour after the start of class
Students do not need to arrive at the beginning of class. Please allow at least one hour for your first practice. Class is not held on New and Full Moon Days, which are traditionally rest days in Ashtanga lineage.
